Boat Buying Made Easy
By Bill Denison

New Owners Bill & Amy   christen MAR-KAT

It was two years ago that Amy and I decided that we wanted to buy a boat built for cruising.  We had a game plan to spend those two years researching the perfect boat.  We started to go to several boat shows each year and subscribed to many boat magazines.  There are so many types of powerboats that it is mind-boggling.  Sport fishing, trawlers, cigarette, go fast boats, tugs and the list continues.  So we did lots of homework.

At the shows the perspective buyer needs to spend time envisioning life on board and how to deal with limited space.  But boat shows don’t lend themselves to having time without having ten other people in the same boat opening all the doors and drawers.  So what’s the alternative?

The best way to judge a boat is to go out and charter a boat for a week.  This was the way we came to know the folks at Southwest Florida Yachts.  We attended their Trawler Training School and chartered a 32-foot Grand Banks single engine one year and a 42-foot Grand Banks the next year.  This is the best sea trial you can make.  Live on and operate the boat in a real world environment.  Last May we completed our charter and that is when we realized that a Grand Banks 42 trawler was the type of boat we wanted to buy.  So what was the next step?

We asked Barbara and Vic Hansen for their assistance and guidance.  After all, they have bought more boats than I have.  We found them extremely knowledgeable and helpful. We wanted a 42 Grand Banks and only had a few absolute “must haves”, up to date electronics, at least 250 hp engines and an island queen in the aft stateroom.  So after a few phone calls, Vic recommended a boat not far from Fort Myers.  So, off we went to look at our dream boat.  Yes, it was the most well equipped Grand Banks with a bow thruster, stabilizers and trim tabs.

Vic and Barb walked us through every aspect of making the offer and arranging a survey.  Since the survey revealed only minor problems we accepted the boat and the seller agreed to fix most of the discrepancies found during the survey.

We also needed insurance, documentation, and financing and the Hansen’s guided us to reputable local businesses.  Within six weeks all the details were worked out and we closed on our boat. We now have a large file of paperwork to prove it.

Now we have the MAR KAT in charter management and the staff at Southwest Florida Yachts are still guiding us.

When your plans call for chartering,  we hope you will choose Southwest Florida Yachts as Bruce and Margaret have ten times over!

Power Cruising

Power Cruising Editor, Pierce Hoover cruised with us in August aboard our Grand Banks 42 trawler to get a first-hand look at the area two years after Hurricane Charley.  Hopefully once and for all the false media claims of Florida’s “devastation” will be laid to rest.  The magazine will showcase the natural beauty that was and still is Southwest Florida.  From Fort Myers to Sanibel, Captiva and Useppa Island, it’s “business as usual” in this cruising paradise.  The docks, restaurants and marine facilities are better and more beautiful than ever.  Come and see for yourself why everyone loves Southwest Florida!

Boating in the Checkout Lane

By Barb Hansen

Is it just me or are the boating magazines spreading too much maleonaise onto their covers?

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love boating magazines. I love them all. But, on this man-woman issue, this woman's antennae went up the other day as my grocery cart rolled past the magazine racks.

I took note of the boating magazines on display. Covers broadcast manly things like “ “Rev It Up, Prop it Up, Beat ‘em Up,” “Boost Your Horsepower,” Two-Stroke Mano-a-Mano,” and “Macho Marine Electronics – Technology for Real Men.” I kept on going.

When I got into the checkout lane I noticed that in this valuable wait-your-turn aisle there were no boating magazines. None. However, there were three rows of women’s magazines. Hmmm. I couldn’t help but notice the difference in the covers.
